Best Air Purifiers Under $200
Under $200 is the sweet spot: the first budget with an AHAM-verified CADR, a real carbon layer and enough airflow for a whole living room. Three machines own the bracket in 2026: the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH, the Winix 5500-2 and the Levoit Core 400S.

The short answer
Coway AP-1512HH if you want one purifier that does everything well. Winix 5500-2 if the problem is smoke or odor. Levoit Core 400S if you want the biggest room coverage and an app that tells you the PM2.5 number.
We don't run a lab. We went through the published CADR and coverage figures, the filter specs and owner reviews, and kept every number consistent with our individual model reviews.
The picks compared
| Model | Best for | CADR (smoke) | Coverage | Noise | Filter life |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Top pick | All-round | 233 CFM | 361 sq ft | 24–54 dB | HEPA ~12 mo, carbon ~6 mo |
| Winix 5500-2 | Smoke & odor | 232 CFM | 360 sq ft | 28–56 dB | HEPA ~12 mo, carbon ~3 mo |
| Levoit Core 400S | Big rooms, smart | 260 CFM | 403 sq ft | 24–52 dB | 3-in-1, 6–8 mo |
All three coverage figures are quoted at five air changes an hour, so they're directly comparable. Each is genuine true-HEPA with a washable pre-filter, and each runs below 30 dB on its lowest setting.
What $200 buys that $100 doesn't
Roughly double the airflow and double the room. The units in our under-$100 round-up cover 190–220 sq ft; these cover 360–400, and add a particle sensor plus a carbon stage thick enough to matter. What you don't get is a second jump above $200 — past this point you're buying square footage, not better filtration.
Coway Airmega AP-1512HH
What we recommend when someone just wants a purifier that works. AHAM-verified CADR of 246 dust / 240 pollen / 233 smoke, 361 sq ft, a floor around 24 dB in eco mode. The pre-filter washes, the HEPA runs about a year, and at roughly 17″ wide and 12 lb it doesn't dominate a room. Full breakdown in our Coway AP-1512HH review.

Near-identical particle numbers to the Coway (243 dust / 246 pollen / 232 smoke, 360 sq ft), but with a thick pelletised carbon filter instead of a thin sheet — why it's our pick in the smoke and odor guide. An odor sensor sits alongside the air-quality sensor, so it ramps when you burn toast. See the Winix 5500-2 review and Coway vs Winix.

260 CFM and 403 sq ft — the most room per dollar here — plus a 24 dB sleep mode, a PM2.5 readout and Wi-Fi through the VeSync app. One 3-in-1 cartridge covers pre-filter, HEPA and carbon, rated 6–8 months, so the running cost stays predictable. Details in our Core 400S review.
Check price on AmazonWhat we don't like
- Coway: the carbon layer is thin — fine for everyday cooking, outrun by a daily smoker or a wood stove. The light ring stays lit unless you dim it.
- Winix: the carbon pellet filter is the one you keep buying — nearer 3 months with heavy odor use than the 12-month HEPA. PlasmaWave is an ionizer; it's switchable, and we'd leave it off.
- Levoit: the whole cartridge gets binned every 6–8 months, and full functionality means an account and an app.
- All three: none handles an open-plan 700+ sq ft space alone — that needs a bigger unit or two of these. See our large-room picks.
Two things to know before you buy
- Price the filters, not the box. Over three years filters can cost more than the purifier. The Winix is the cheapest to buy and the priciest to feed if you run it hard on odor; the Levoit cartridge is one part on a fixed schedule. Timing and warning signs in our replacement filters guide.
- Match CADR to the room, not the price tag. A 233 CFM machine in a 500 sq ft room is slow, not broken — it just won't hit five air changes an hour. Do the arithmetic with our CADR and room-size guide.
Verdict
For most rooms, the Coway AP-1512HH — the most balanced machine at this budget. Smoke, cooking smells or pets: the Winix 5500-2, for the carbon alone. A big living room or a gadget habit: the Levoit Core 400S. All three help reduce airborne allergens like dust, pollen and dander. If money is tighter, start with our budget picks.

What is the best air purifier under $200?
The Coway Airmega AP-1512HH for all-round use — 233 CFM smoke CADR, 361 sq ft, true-HEPA plus carbon and a 24 dB eco mode. The Winix 5500-2 is the better choice if odor is the problem.
Is a $200 air purifier better than a $100 one?
Mostly in room size: roughly double the CADR, 360–400 sq ft instead of ~200, plus a sensor and thicker carbon. The HEPA media is comparable.
Which one is quietest?
The Core 400S and the Coway sit near 24 dB on low; the Winix floor is about 28 dB. All three work overnight in a bedroom.
How big a room will these cover?
360–403 sq ft at five air changes an hour; roughly 900–1,000 sq ft at two changes an hour, which is background duty.
Do I need to spend more than $200?
Only for square footage. Above this bracket you're buying higher CADR for open-plan spaces, not a better filter.
