Best Air Purifier for Litter Box Smell
Litter box smell is ammonia — a gas. HEPA does nothing to it. What clears a room is carbon mass, and most purifiers sold "for pets" carry almost none.

We don't run a lab. We went through published CADR figures, carbon specs and owner reviews from multi-cat homes, and ranked by what decides this job: how much adsorbent a unit holds.
Why a HEPA filter can't touch litter smell
Box smell is ammonia released as urea breaks down, plus trace sulfur compounds. Ammonia is a gas molecule about 0.00034 microns across; True HEPA is rated at 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles, a thousand times bigger. It goes straight through the pleats.
Only activated carbon holds odor gas, and it works by surface area — quantity decides everything. A carbon-dusted sheet weighs a few ounces and saturates in weeks; a pellet tray holds a few hundred grams; a steel drum holds pounds. That spread, not the HEPA rating, is why one purifier kills the smell and another moves it around. Ammonia is also small and polar, which plain carbon grips poorly — zeolite in the bed holds it.
Our picks for a litter box room
| Model | Best for | Coverage | Carbon stage | Noise (low) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Winix 5500-2 Top pick | One or two cats, living area | 360 sq ft | Pellet tray, washable | ~28 dB |
| Austin Air HealthMate | Three cats or a closed room | ~1500 sq ft | 15 lb carbon + zeolite | ~50 dB (high) |
| Levoit Vital 200S | Litter dust and fur too | ~380 sq ft | Carbon layer, pet pre-filter | ~24 dB |
| Coway Airmega AP-1512HH | Bedroom, box nearby | 361 sq ft | Thin carbon layer | ~24 dB |
Winix 5500-2
The carbon here is loose pellets in a tray, not printed onto mesh — real adsorbent mass, which is why it beats prettier rivals on odor. Airflow backs it up: 232 CFM smoke CADR over 360 sq ft, so a 200 sq ft room turns over about five times an hour and the smell never builds.
- Pellet carbon tray — most adsorbent per dollar here
- Washable pre-filter stops fur and litter grit
- PlasmaWave on by default — we switch it off
- About 56 dB on high — you'll hear the post-scoop blast
- Carbon tray lasts ~3 months in a cat home, not 12

Three boxes in a laundry room out-produce any consumer carbon tray. The HealthMate holds 15 pounds of carbon and zeolite in a steel drum, and zeolite is what goes after ammonia specifically. Its filter is rated up to 5 years; a multi-cat house gets less, but nothing else needs replacing.
- 15 lb carbon-zeolite bed — nothing consumer-grade is close on ammonia
- One filter, no stack of consumables
- ~45 lb, bulky, one knob for controls
- Around 50 dB on high — not a bedside machine
Levoit Vital 200S
Clay and silica litter throw respirable dust every time a cat digs, onto the same filter as the fur. The Vital 200S has a washable pet pre-filter for exactly that, covers about 380 sq ft and sits near 24 dB on low. Its carbon is a layer, not a tray, so on smell alone it trails the Winix — but for dust, hair and odor at once it's the better single buy. More in our Vital 200S review and cat hair picks.

- Carbon saturates, then releases. A loaded bed doesn't just stop working — warm air through it pushes adsorbed odor back out, which is why month four smells worse than month one. Budget the carbon stage every 3 months here; the yearly filter bill matters more than the sticker. Intervals: our replacement filter guide.
- No purifier out-runs a dirty box. Scooping twice a day, a box about 1.5x the cat's length, an inch and a half of clumping litter and a monthly wash do more than anything here. Buy the purifier for what escapes that routine.
How to run it
Stand it a few feet from the box, not beside it — too close and the intake draft lifts litter dust when the cat digs. Leave it on low or auto continuously, with 15 to 20 minutes on high after you scoop. Keep the intake clear of walls and vacuum the pre-filter monthly; fur mats it fast. FAQ
Will an air purifier get rid of litter box smell?
It cuts it noticeably with real carbon and enough airflow, but won't beat a box that needs scooping — carbon handles what escapes into the air, not the source.
Does HEPA remove ammonia?
No. HEPA captures particles down to 0.3 microns; ammonia is a gas molecule thousands of times smaller. Odor is the carbon stage's job.
How much carbon do I actually need?
More than a coated sheet. A pellet tray like the Winix's is the minimum for one or two cats; three or more needs a pounds-of-carbon unit.
Where should I put the purifier?
Same room, a few feet from the box, intake clear. Right beside it stirs litter dust; the next room over is pointless.
How often do filters need changing with cats?
Faster than the manual says: carbon near every 3 months, HEPA on its normal 8 to 12 months, pre-filter vacuumed monthly. See how often to replace filters.
